Holy Cow! Phil Went Home

I am a life-long, born-and-bred Yankees fan through and through. There is no other baseball team I'd ever root for. When I was a little girl, I'd watch the Yanks with my dad, and I loved to listen to Phil Rizzuto's commentary. I loved when something great would happen and he'd yell, "Holy cow!" I can still hear his voice in my head any time I read that phrase.

In his decades on the radio and TV, Rizzuto's favorite phrase was "Holy cow!" He trotted it out when calling Roger Maris' record-breaking 61st home run in 1961 and the saying became so much a part of him, the team presented him with a cow wearing a halo when they held a day in his honor in 1985. The cow knocked Rizzuto over and, of course, he shouted, "Holy cow!"

I actually REMEMBER watching that. We still lived in New Jersey, so we could watch every Yankees game. I remember laughing because the cow's name was Huckleberry, and Phil himself laughed when it knocked him over.

He was a real class act.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.

May his soul and the souls of all the faithfully departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

Amen.
