Another Brain Teaser Set (Final Update)

Update (01-24-08, 3:47 p.m. EST): Okay, so this one was a bust. Oh, well! The last of the answers are below. I'll save this kind of brainteaser for another time, and I'll look for different types to be more interesting. Thanks for playing!

Update (01-22-08, 2:47 p.m. EST): Cath is a busy bee! She's got several answers correct. (You can compare what's been posted with what's in the com boxes.) I swear, the way you guys answer these things, I think I've got the smartest eight readers in the world! (That is my Bloglines subscription count. I might have two more readers, if we don't count my husband, mother, and sister. That would put me up to a baker's dozen!)

Rules are in the older two posts.

  1. When you see geese flying in a V formation, why is it that one leg of the V is always longer than the other? Because it has more geese in it.

  2. Why are there so many Smiths in the telephone directory? Because they all have telephone lines.

  3. What is E.T. short for? So that he can fit in the small spaceship.

  4. Where do you find a no-legged dog? Exactly where you left him.

  5. Approximately how many house bricks does it take to complete a brick house in England? One. It takes many bricks to build the house, but only one brick to complete it.

  6. How do you stop a bull from charging? Take away his credit cards.

  7. What cheese is made backward? Edam.

  8. Take away my first letter, and I remain the same. Now take away my fourth letter, and I remain the same. Now take away my last letter, and I remain the same. What am I? A mailman.

  9. If a white man threw a black stone into the Red Sea, what would it become? Wet.

  10. How do you make a bandstand? Take away their chairs.

Have fun!

Brain Teasers: Part II (Final Update)

(1-22-08: Sorry for the delay in updating!)

Okay, all. Here come the next ten questions in my Brain Teaser Marathon! I'll check your answers (com boxes, please) after I get the girls into bed tonight, and I'll post any answers you missed tomorrow afternoon before basketball practice.

You all did a great job yesterday!! Gold stars all around!

  1. What gets higher as it falls? Snow
  2. How do you stop moles from digging in your garden? Hide their shovels!
  3. Why did the overweight actor fall through the theater floor? It was just a stage he was going through.
  4. What happened to the man who invented the silent alarm clock? He won a Nobel Prize.
  5. What's the best known star with a tail? Micky Mouse
  6. How did an actor get his name up in lights in every theater in the country? He changed his name to EXIT.
  7. Where would you find a square ring? A boxing arena.
  8. What do you give a bald rabbit? A hare piece!
  9. How do you make a slow horse fast? Don't feed him. (A good Catholic answer!)
  10. Why did Sam wear a pair of pants with three large holes? To get his feet in. (All pants have three large holes.)

I'll give you one hint about today's: many of these are puns and groaners rather than brain teasers. (I'm getting them from a book called Classic Lateral Thinking Puzzles, which I might pull other stuff from. For now, you're stuck with these.)

Have fun!

Update (01-17-08, 10:20 a.m. EST): Stacey is on the right track with her answer for #8. It's so close that she might get credit for the right answer. :) Barb is on the right track with her answer for #5. (Think warm and sunny.) I'll check back again later today, between laundry, taking down Christmas trees, and sledding.

Brain Teaser Time! (Final Updates)

Okay, I've got several of these. I'll do one a day until they have all been completed. Answers in the com boxes, please. I'll check after dinner to see who has gotten what right, and I'll post answers as I see them. Answers for all ten will be posted tomorrow evening, and a new set of ten will follow.

  1. If a man bets you that he can bite his eye, should you take the bet? No. He'll take his glass eye out of the socket and bite it.

  2. If he now bets you that he can bite his other eye, should you take that bet? No, he'll take out his dentures and bit it.

  3. How can you stand behind someone while he stands behind you? Stand back-to-back.

  4. What looks like a horse, moves like a horse, and is as big as a horse, but weighs nothing? A horse's shadow.

  5. Who is bigger: Mr. Bigger or Mr. Bigger's son? Mr. Bigger's son. No matter how big Mr. Bigger is, his son is always a little Bigger!

  6. Tom's mother had three children. One was named April; one was named May. What was the third one named? Tom.

  7. Where could you go to see an ancient pyramid, an iceberg, and a huge waterfall? Egypt, Greenland, and Niagra Falls. Among other places. What? I never said it was all in one place!

  8. What has four fingers and a thumb but isn't a hand? A glove.

  9. What multiplies by division? I'll accept "a cell" as the answer. The one in my book said an amoeba, which is, according to this definition, a cell. But I suppose other cells also multiply by division.

  10. What's white when it's dirty and black when it's clean? A chalkboard.

Remember, boys and girls, answers go in the comboxes. I'll check and see how you're doing after dinner. Have fun!

Update (7:42 p.m. EST): Wow! I barely had this thing up and I got two comments from Love2Learn Mom! You people are FAST! I'll check back once the girls are in bed.

Update (9:29 p.m. EST): You ladies are very good at this game. We've only got one left: number 7. I'll post the answer tomorrow if no one guesses, then I'll post the next ten questions.

Update (5:40 p.m. EST, Wednesday, Jan. 16): The final answer is revealed above. I'll post the next ten questions for you and check back after dinner.

Brain Teaser (UPDATED)

First update is below. Next update will be later this evening.

UPDATE #2: Barb, SFO, got the answer. See comments for her answer. In the meantime, I put the other two clues up.

Next brain teaser will definitely be more difficult. :)

By the Time I Get to Pheonix

One day Nick boasted to his friend, Frank, that he had once driven an automobile from coast to coast in less than twenty-four hours. Naturally, Frank realizes that Nick has finally stretched the truth to the breaking point. Frank offers his boastful buddy five thousand dollars if Nick can cuplicate his miraculous driving feat. Although it pained him greatly to do so, Frank conceded defeat as soon as Nick explained how it could be done.

What was Nick's explanation?

Clues will be revealed throughout the day.

Clue 1:

Q: Did Nick plan to make this drive in another country?

A: No.

Clue 2:

Q: Could Nick have actually performed this feat if Frank had asked him to?

A: Yes.

Clue 3:

Q: Could the average person have accomplished this task?

A: Yes.

Leave your best guesses in the comboxes. (This one is actually not that hard, IMO.)
Who are your heros?
